William MOTHERSHEAD married Lucy LONG 11 Mar 1788
I don't believe we yet have solid source documentation that this is
the same William who dies in 1828, but it seems very nearly certain.
William died intestate in late 1828 in Jefferson Co, MO. At the time
of his death, his eleven year old grandson Hazlet SARVER(?) was living
with him, and his wife seems to have already died (she's not mentioned
in the probate records we've seen).
Minor and Clifton MOTHERSHEAD are the administrators of the estate, which
takes a while to settle.
Minor's first name comes from the marriage of a Nathaniel MOTHERSHEAD and
Mary MINOR in 1761 in Orange Co, VA that(presumably) produces 12
children. They seem to be his grandparents, though we don't know for certain
who his parents are. I say "a Nathaniel" because we have not seen documentation
that proves this is the Nathaniel that was born in 1698, or maybe 1709, and had
a wife of unknown name before Mary MINOR. We've seen many people claim that, but have
seen no solid documentation of it.
On 02 Mar 1830, Orson BAKER, Milton BAKER, and John WILLIAMSON sign receipts
for $650 each as part of their share of William's estate as "heir at law".
These receipts are witnessed by Thomas LONG.
On 12 Apr 1830, Samuel THURMAN(?) signs a receipt for $650 as part of his
share of William's estate as "heir at law". This receipt is witnessed by
On 04 May 1831, Clifton signs a receipt for $650 as a part of his share of
the estate as "heir at law", and Minor signs a receipt stating he is the
guardian of the grandson and receives $650 as a part of the grandson's share
of William's estate. Neither receipt has a witness signature. Minor was
Hazlet's guardian for about a year, and then, on the petition of Milton
BAKER, Minor was removed as guardian and Milton instated. Presumably this
was because Minor was going back to Bullitt Co, KY (where he came from),
but we don't yet know that.
Minor MOTHERSHEAD was born 1793 (1792-1794; the 1850 Bullitt Co, KY census
shows his age as 57). Minor married Celia HALL (dau of Clifton HALL) on
08 Aug 1816 in Bullitt Co, KY (well known to Bullitt Co HALL researchers).
Clifton MOTHERSHEAD was born c1800. He died in 1838, and his age is given
as 38 at death. Clifton's parents and place of birth are not known to us.
c1827, Clifton MOTHERSHEAD married Martha "Patsy" ????????, apparently in
MO, and probably in Jefferson Co, though we aren't certain of either
yet. He seems to have been in Cape Giradeau MO after 1820 along with
a Charles MOTHERSHEAD (from the tax roles, it seems that Charles is
either young and unmarried, or too old to pay taxes). It is believed
that Martha "Patsy" was Clifton's first cousin. So far, the best
documentation we have for that is a letter from Sterling Price
MOTHERSHEAD (their grandson) to his neice Mrs Hannah Beatte, dated
14 Mar 1938, San Bernadino, CA. The assumption from this (since he
doesn't state otherwise) is that her maiden name was MOTHERSHEAD, but
we've come across a possibility that it could have been LEWIS (and
there are obviously other possibilities).
Clifton died in 1838, and in 1840 Martha "Patsy" married John MURRELL in
Jefferson Co, MO. She died after 1870 (she's on the census) but I don't
think we've gotten around to looking up exactly when. There's a picture
of her late in life on my sister's website:
Now the questions:
Minor is not an "heir at law" of William's, and therefore not his son.
How is he related? Specifically, who are Minor's parents?
How is it that Milton and Orson BAKER, John WILLIAMSON, and Samuel THURMAN(?)
are "heir at law"?
Clifton is an "heir at law". Is he William's son, or is there some other
connection (e.g., like the BAKERs, et al)? If William is not his father,
then who are his parents and where was he born?
Presumably Hazlet SARVER is William's grandson via a daughter who married
a SARVER. Are Hazlet's parents known?
Who are the parents of this Martha "Patsy" who marries Clifton?
She's a generation too young to be the Martha who married Orson
BAKER according to Vicki Faciane's note quoted below.
There's a Warren Co, KY marriage record for Austin BAKER and "Betsy"
MOTHERSHEAD on 08 May 1813."Betsy" would seem to indicate that the
real first name was Elizabeth, but that's only a guess at this point.
In a message on this forum dated 02 Jan 2000, Vicki Faciane says:
Sarah Marie Mothershead was the first wife of Milton Baker - most
likely married before 1820. Her sister, Martha, married his brother,
Orson,(my ancestors) May 8, 1813, in Warren Co., KY.
Is the Betsy who marries Austin the sister of the Martha who marries Orson,
and are Austin and Orson brothers, with a "double wedding"? Or is there some
confusion as to who all of these people really are? And who are the parents
of Sarah Marie and this Martha?
These people are as confusing as all the Nathaniel MHs in VA....
