There is a reference to the name of "Mottershaw" in the Doomsday Book created during the reign of William I (William the Conqueror) in the 11th Century.Cheshire was the area of domicile, and the family then went into the surrounding counties of Nottingham, Derbyshire, Shropshire, and Yorkshire. The family has a "Coat of Arms" as most similar families had in those days, but I haven't the details.
The census showed other members of the family living in the area where John and Betsey were and even their names had different spellings "Mottashaw, Mothershaw, Motershaw, Mottersham, and Mattershaw. Our families in Yorkshire also had Mottishaw and Mottershall, which is very awkward when trying to trace the family connections. There is obviously a connectionwith us through Derby, Nottingham, Sheffield, Wakefield and Leeds.
My husband's grandmother told of the family being from Yorkshire County and Chesterton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England.
