I am a descendant of Thomas Mousley.Unfortunately I have little information on his father.
Thomas married Rebecca Knight on 19/9/1837 at the Parish Church in St Mary Lambeth, Surrey (London). He was of full age, resident Ellesmere, Shropshire; she was a minor, resident in Vauxhall (i.e. local). His father was Benjamin Mousley, farmer. Her father was Solomon Knight, builder.Witnesses include Solomon Knight and Mary Knight but no Mousleys.
My 2nd gt-grandfather Henry Larard married Fanny Mousley on 17 Feb 1870 in Croydon Parish Church, Surrey, when she was 22.(Witnesses include Marian Mousley and Alf? Mousley.) It was a big surprise when I discovered this as I was moved to Croydon from my West Midlands homeland when I was a kid.
Seems the same happened to Fanny as her birth cert reveals that she was born in Ellesmere, Shropshire 27/10/1847.Her father is shown as Thomas Mousley, Surgeon on all 3 docs. The mother was Rebecca Mousley nee Knight. They lived at Chapel St Ellesmere at the time of her birth.
Henry was a jeweller by trade and the story goes that he merged his business with Fanny's jewellery business based in Hatton Gardens, London. When Henry died young, Fanny's brother James bought the business for an annuity. Henry's son Ernest also died young leaving a wife, 3 sons and my paternal grandmother in dire straits.
Some nice American Mousleys got in touch (wasn't you, was it?) but sadly I've lost their information.I believe they are descendants of James and apparently the family were railway pioneers in the US.A web search also reveals a William Mousley of Eccleshall, Staffs, railway contractor in 1889.
Let me know if you find out any more.Benjamin being a farmer might suggest that land records and wills might be helpful.I'll let you know if I ever get around to checking!
