How do I explain James P. Mullins of 1848? Strange story. I must start with his great grandfather Ambrose Mullins Sr. born in Franklin County VA in 1751 and died 1835 in Russell County VA. He moved alot. Nobody really knows his wife's maiden name, but a Rev War pension is made out to Nancy Mullins. He had 9 kids that I know of. The ones important to this story are Dorcas Mullins 1794-1880 and Isham Mullins 1798-1860. Dorcas is my 4th great grandmother, so notorious they called her Darkie. She married John P. Kelly, but that was not working out. John moved to Washington State when he learned Darkie was pregnant with the child of William Little. She moved in with William for awhile, had his son William Jr. in 1814, and then William married another. Rebounding Darkie got pregnant by an unknown Mullins male that by DNA is related to her father Ambrose Sr. This was probably a 1st cousin. You will see a pattern here. Her divorce from John in Floyd County Ky finishes 24 Apr 1817. Lots of boyfriends are listed in the testimony against her, but none are the father of her Mullins baby to be. James P Kelly of 1818 is born. Why she uses the marriage name is unclear. Probably stigma. He grows up and marries his uncle Isham's daughter whose mother is Rosanna Hager-Mullins born 1797. To confuse things, she is also named Dorcas but born 1822. James P Kelly of 1818 has several children with her, one of which is James P. Kelly of 1848. At some point I saw a CSA deserter list and I think both father and son may have been on it. That would explain alot since father and son and their wives and children all change their names back to MULLINS, which it should have been all along. I'd love to see the union records you have found! Interesting! The pattern continues, as James P Mullins of 1848 marries his 1st cousin Elizabeth Louise Jane Collins-Roberts (Mullins then Hatfield marriages).
When they divorce, James P. Mullins of 1848 moves from WV, leaving ex-wife and 6 kids behind. He marries Millie Ann Colley on 07 Jun 1892. They live in Dickenson County VA in the Sand Lick district and later Willis, Dickenson, VA. Kids are Amanda T. 1893-1974, King Solomon (my great grandfather) 1894-1990, Ellene Maudie 1897-1980, John A. 1898, George W. 1900-1976, Lemuel 1902-1969, Etta Mae 1905-2004, Ervin J. 1908, Carrie 1910-2003, and Auty Stanford 1914-1995.
To further confuse things, the 1900 census sand lick Dickenson VA he is living in residence #33 as James P Mullins. Beware of residence #32 next door! That James P. Mullins was born 3 years after my 2nd great grandfather James P!
