WILLIAM FERGUSON - Among the enterprising and progressive business men of Scottdale, who have won honorable position by their straightforward transactions, must be mentioned WILLIAM FERGUSON.He is a worthy representative of a Scotch-Irish ancestry, from whom he inherited his many excellent traits of character.
WILLIAM FERGUSON was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, Oct. 29, 1869, a son of JOHN and SARAH (BELL) FERGUSON, highly esteemed residents of that city.He attended the public schools adjacent to his home, and when old enough to assist in earning his own livelihood was employed in various capacities for a number of years, and later (pg. 808) entered the employ of his brother, BENJAMIN FERGUSON, a dealer in mantels, grates and tile in Cleveland, Ohio, and thus continued until 1889, when he located in Scottdale, Pa., and later became an undertaker and funeral director, a business he has since most successfully conducted.He was the founder, with Wesley Kelley, of the U. S. Casket Co., but disposed of his interests therein in the year 1910.His honorable business methods lead to his election as director of the Scottdale Trust Co., one of the financial institutions of note in that thriving city.MR. FERGUSON is a Republican in politics, and since 1909 has served in the capacity of deputy coroner of Westmoreland Co., performing his duties in an entirely satisfactory manner.He also served as burgess of Scottdale for three years.He holds membership in the United Brethren Church, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Knights of the Golden Eagle, and various other fraternal orders, also in the Americus Republican Club, of Pittsburgh, Pa.He derives the greatest pleasure from hunting, and has hunted big game in various parts of North America.He has one of the finest motor equipments for business use in Western Pa.
MR. FERGUSON married, Dec. 11, 1890, SALLIE OVERHOLT MUMAW, daughter of GEORGE and ELIZABETH (STAUFFER) MUMAW, of East Huntingdon Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pa.They are the parents of three children: MAUDE RUTH; GEORGE MUMAW, married, Jan. 19, 1916, NELLIE MAY RITCHIE, of Scottdale; and JOHN MUMAW.
