Bannockburn was first known as Mumby's Mills after William Mumby who established a grist mill in the late 1850's. He became involved in a legal battle with a Scot in a lawsuit over the mill. Hotel owner James Maitland called the affair the Battle of Bannockburn, a reference to the English - Scottish battle of 1311 which the Scots won. The name stuck and replaced the original Mumby's Mills.
If you are kin to William Mumby, I believe there may also be a connection with my north Lincolnshire, England branch of the family.
