I have notes assembled by Cora Ruth (Mumford) Fluckey, d/o Rufus James Mumford and Sara Frances Newton. The children in birth order are (1)s.James Cossie M.,(w.Mary Edwards);(2)s.Pearl Harrison M.,(3)s.John Elmer M.,(w.Josephine Daniels);(4)d.Laura Mae M.,(5)d.Bertha Frances M., (h.Lloyd M. Josiah Showell Mumford may be the Joseph Mumford who appears in 1850 census, Worcester Co., IA, age 30, b.(location unkown); wife Mary, age 20, b. DE; son Rufas, age 3, b.MD, Sara, age 1, b. MD; and Lotta Evans, age 20, b. MD. [Note that John Lemual Mumford was not included in this family listing as he was born August 15 after the census taker had visited on July 25, 1850].
In 1856, Joseph Mumford purchased 80 ac. in Liberty Twp. Lucas Co., IA. Other researchers have suggested Josiah Showell Mumford, b. 1812 is Joseph Mumford, although there is an eight year discrepancy in date of birth between 1812 and 1820. An ajoining 80 ac. parcel was purchased by Rufus M. Murray, b. abt. 1821, MD who appears to be a close relative, possibly the namesake of Rufus James Mumford. Two other ajoining parcels were held by Josiah P. Davis and Jesse E. Mumford. James Morris Mumford, a brother of Jesse E. and Leticia(Mummford)Davis, wife of Peter Campbell Davis. Other nearby land was farmed by Jes Morris Mumford, Mordeca Davis.
