Thanks so much for sending all that information that you found on the Murdocks in Tippecanoe County, IN. It was interesting to hear some of your theories on what might have happened to the disappearing Eliza Murdock! Actually, John Stevens has done quite a few disappearing acts during his long life, also, so together, they have both led me on a merry chase.
I don't believe that the Eliza Clark in the 1860 census Murdock household is the same person as Eliza Murdock. I do have a copy of their marriage license (Eliza and John) which is on the date you found. Eliza is listed as a Murdock. In Eliza's obit, she is named as eldest sister of James and Thomas, so you are right about her being an older member of the family.
Actually, your entry on John Stephens is probably not my John, as he was married before (to a KELLY who died abt 1858) and had three sons. Two of those sons (James and John) show up in his household with Eliza in the 1870 census. (I have no idea what happened to William at that time, who would have been abt 12). This will probably explain to you why their ages predate the 1860 marriage to Eliza. However, things back then weren't always pristine; I have found more than one document showing John and Eliza's daughter Sarah also predating the marriage date, but I have records showing her to be daughter of both John and Eliza and not some other woman. So, wherever John was in 1860, I am wondering if Eliza might have already been in that household, rather than at her parents' home.
Sibba or Libba or Sally is most likely the Murdock mother. At least that is one step closer to naming Eliza's parents. There's bound to be a Murdock descendant cross our tracks somewhere in the archives and help us out with this at some point, but as yet, I'm not sure about the father's name. Tippecanoe county did not keep real swell records, that I've noticed...
Thank you so much for all the work you've gone through in providing this information. I'll also reply to your other bb post so there is a record of this there, too.
btw, since you are a Murdock, any chance you are related to this line? Jacqi
