James was born in Saybrook, Connecticut,Feb. 18, 1755, and married Anne daughter of Capt. Joseph Buckingham, Sept. 30, 1779. She died at Houseville, NY, Nov. 11 1838. James graduated at Yale College in 1774 and was licensed as a congregational minister in 1776. He preached for some time in Pawlet Vt., but in 1781 was settled in Sandgate, Vt. He was chaplin in Col. Ira Allen's regiment that year. He was afterwards settled as pastor in Turin, Martinsburg, and Gouverneur NY. In 1825 he gave up his pastorate and lived at Housville, NY until the death of his wife, after which he lived with his son Samuel at Crown Point NY.He died Jan. 14, 1841.
