I first found reference to the relationshiap of John, Jeremiah and George in an article by William B. Marye, Chairman, Committee on Genealogy and Heraldry, printed inMaryland Historical Magazine, Volume XXV, entitled"The Murdock Family of Maryland and Virginia."," Baltimore, 1930: Pages 262-270.Mr. Marye states that "Reverend George Murdock and Captain John Murdock were very closely related."I have found other information which supports this.On page 270 of his article, Mr. Marye states, "In it (George's will) he mentions his son, William Murdock, and his grandsons George, William, George Beale Murdock and Elisha Murdock. (Cary Papers, folder 68.)Mr Cary was of the opinion that, in addition to his son William, he had a son Benjamin Murdock."
I did find supporting evidence for this in a book by Beverley Fleet, Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Volume I,(Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1988), Page 580, Benj:Son of Geo and Mary.Grandson of Benj Browne. 16 Nov 1708.
Therefore, I have deduced from the information that I have gathered, the following:
REVEREND GEORGE MURDOCK:
Bef. 1724, First Parish in America was St. James Northam, Goochland County, VA
February 20, 1723/24, Ordained a deacon in London, England
Probate: May 14, 1761, Prince George's County, MD
Will dated May 14, 1760, Prince George's County, MD
Children of GEORGE MURDOCK and MARY BROWNE are:
i. BENJAMIN MURDOCK, b. Bef. 1708.
ii. WILLIAM MURDOCK, b. Abt. 1721, Scotland.
I guess that George went back to Scotland to become ordained as a minister and had William while he was there, but I have nothing to support this information.
I know nothing about Benjamin.
I do not know who this William married, but I believe his children to be as follows:
George b 1742 - 1805 Frederick Co
Benjamin b 1744
William b 1746
Thomas b 1748 - Dec 21, 1814 removed toVirginia before the Revolutionary Warsettling in Monongalia? County servedin the 4th Regt Va Rifleman.Nameplaced on pension roll Sept 21, 1819,but he had died Dec 21, 1814
Elizabeth b abt 1800
David b abt 1802
Jane b abt 1804
John b abt 1806
Thomas b 1808
Joseph - moved to Virginia after theRevolutionary War, little if anythingcan be obtained about his son. Ifthis is a son of William, thenfollowing the birth pattern of everytwo years, he would have been bornabout 1750.(Note:There is also amarriage record for Joseph Murdock whomarried Martha Lee in WashingtonCounty, Va.Could they have had ason, William M. Murdoch born 1828?It would not be this Joseph, not if hewas born in 1750/52.Perhaps, it wasthis Joseph's son.)
Jane - If this is a daughter ofWilliam, then following the birthpattern of every two years, she wouldhave been born about 1750/52.
I also think there is a Barbara in there somewhere - she married Andrew Bruce, but I am not sure where she fits in.
I do not have much, if any, supporting evidence for this William's children.
John's William was born about 1710 (possibly as early as 1701 according to one source.I have deduced that John was born about 1680 so this is possible). There is much written about this William and this is the one that married Anne Addison and then Margaret Dulany. He married around about 1727, from what I can gather, and then Margaret Dulany on January 1, 1757.
I hope this helps. It is about all I have or have guessed. If you have anything to share, please do.Remember I am descended from Jeremiah and a lot of what I have gathered on his brothers is in hopes of finding my way back farther.
