To the best of my knowledge, this family is not related to me.
You can find the 1880 census online for free at www.familysearch.org.It shows the following for Eli Murdock's family. In 1880, they were in Franklin, Ripley County, Indiana. If I were guessing, I would say your Thomas Ira was born in Ripley County, IN.Perhaps you could go to that GenWeb site (http://www.rootsweb.com/~inripley/) and find more information.Perhaps the Ripley County site has the 1900 census or perhaps the Michigan's Gladwin county site (http://www.rootsweb.com/~migladwi/) has the 1900 census and you could go from there.
A lot of the counties do have the 1850 census online or at least an index for it.A lot of the subscription genealogy sites give free trials from time to time too which might help you.
Perhaps you have already done this.If not, then maybe it will help.
