Your comments are informative. The Murdys that I am related to come from County Cavan Ireland. This is just south of Northern Ireland. It was one of maybe two or three counties that were formed by the Quenn of England as Ulster settlements. There is much I don't know. However, I believe that the name may be of Scottish/English origin. I learned of an Elizabeth Murdock (Murdy) who was born about 1782 in Edinburgh Scotland. Her spouse was John Smith. In addition to Mc Murdy, I have seen spellings such as: Murdie, Murty and Mordo to name a few. I believe that the name got somewhat changed over 100 years ago. I think the problem arised from the Gaelic translation into English. As we know, many name spellings changed. For instance the surname spelling of Leigh was changed to Lee when many of those families came to America. I also think that hundreds of years ago, people didn't know how to spell their names and had to figure it out when required to write it in English.
