In the passing of Mr. Jessie Levi Murphree, Humphrey and Hickman county lost one of the most worthy and honorable citizens.During the pioneer days, his grandfather Daniel Murphree came to Brown's Bend in Hickman County.At this place his father, Levi Murphree was born and lived until he moved to the Murphree home in Barren Hollow.Jesse Levi Murphree was born April 1, 1862 near Only in Hickman Co and there he spent the greater part of his boyhood.Afterward he came to Barren Hollow, where he lived until first marriage, then moving to Lowe's Bend near Centerville, where he lived for a few years, returning to the old Murphree home in Barren Hollow in 1892 where he spent the remainder of his days.He was first married to Annie Lowe, Dec 27, 1883.To this union were born Mrs. P.C. Milan, David Lee Murphree, Mrs. M. M. Reeves, W. E. Murphree and Mrs. W. D. Wherry.His first wife preceded him in death many years.Later he was married to Vina Weatherspoon on 9/20/1896.To the second marriage were born the following children:Priscilla Murphree, Mrs. E. H. Wrenn, Mrs. Buren B. Brown, Mrs. A. H. Dean, Mrs. Guy C. Brown, Mrs. L. W. Richardson, Mrs. Thomas Pinkerton, Patterson, J. Wilson and Crockett Murphree.He is survived by his wife, the children named above, thirty grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. George Owens and Mrs. David Owens, a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.He was firm in his convictions, a strong believer in and a loyal supporter of the Primitive Baptist Church.He was highly respected by the citizens of the communities in which he lived.He was noted for his jolly, good natured character, always having a smile or a laugh for all his friends.He was a devoted husband, a loving father and a worthy citizen.The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Vanderberg of Nashville and Rev. Rushton of Hurricane Mills, at the home on Oct. 12 at 2:00.Interment, with Luff-Bowen Co., in charge was at the Weatherspoon Cemetery near Only.Active pallbearers were the grandsons:Elmer and Jess Bass, Jessie Albert, Bill and Moulton Reeves, W. D Milan and Lewis Murphree.Honorary, B. Brown, David Owens, S. M Simmons, A. Weatherspoon, T. M. Owens, J. C. Penkerton, Ben Wilkins, B. Richardson, J. N. Duncan, George McClanahan, Jesse Wilkins, and W. L. Pinkerton.
