Hello Mary - The MUSE DNA project has proved there are six distinct MUSE lines in the U.S. which have no connection to John Muse SR (1633-1723) of Westmoreland Co VA. Fauntleroy (or Fauntley) Muse is one of them.
DNA Haplogroups include Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Nordic, Semitic, & Native American. Fauntleroy's ancestry was Nordic. Two descendants of Fauntley Muse took the DNA test, with identical results.
A century ago, descendants of Fauntley Muse of Allegheny Co PA had a family legend that his parents were "Col. Lawrence Muse and Betsey Fauntleroy", and that after Lawrence Muse died, Betsey married Col. William Elrod. In the early 1900s, this story was printed in several genealogical books & magazines, & taken on faith by later researchers.
There's no evidence that "Col. Lawrence Muse" ever existed. If he did, he left no trace of himself in VA, PA, or anywhere else. Betsey Fauntleroy, born ca 1736, was the "Lowland Beauty" who supposedly spurned George Washington. She married twice, but not to a Muse.
Several other facts refute this family legend. 1.Fauntley Muse was born 1757, "near Winchester, VA" per his Rev. War pension application. 2.Col. William Elrod was born 1764, per his Bible record,in which he named his wife Mary & his parents.
The following entries are from Col. William Elrod's Bible, written in his own hand: "William Elrod son of John Teter ELROD and Mary MUSE his wife was born at Old Town in the State of Maryland on the Potomac River November 6A.D. 1764. Mary Elrod my wife was born December 15 A.D. 1768" "John Teter ELROD my father was born Lancaster Co Pennsylvania in the year A.D. 1732" "Mary MUSE my mother was born Westmoreland Co in the year A.D. 1729" "John Teter ELROD and Mary MUSE were married 1761 in Winchester, Frederick Co VA" "William ELROD and Mary his wife was married Septr. 26, 1786" (Col. Elrod's will names wife MARY to have the "Elrod Family Record." She died 25 Aug 1828 in Clermont Co Ohio, "at the home of her son Thomas")
Col. William Elrod did name a son Muse Elrod,to honor his mother. The "Fauntley" name was carried on by his Muse descendants, probably because he was a Rev. War patriot, not because of a connection with the Fauntleroys of VA.
So Fauntley Muse, b 1757, was not the son of "Col Lawrence Muse & Betsey Fauntleroy", & there's no proof he was born to Mary Muse before she married John Teter Elrod in 1761.
It's possible that Fauntley was the first of his line in America.
Lastly, there's no proof that Mary Muse was a missing daughter of William Muse (John JR, John SR) and his wife, Mary Pope, of Prince William Co VA. Best Regards, Lou
