Michael, Good to hear from you. My direct ancestor, Nathaniel Neilson (1760-1834), lived in Jamaica from 1785 through 1808. He returned to Scotland a moderately wealthy man and bought Springfield estate just outside Castle Douglas in Galloway (SW Scotland). Whereupon he immediately impregnated his housekeeper! He then married Barbara Agnew (1791-1865) and, between 1813 and 1831,fathered a further 11 children. I have a photo of a portrait of the man. He is sitting at a table covered in what might be plans or maps. He is holding a large pair of dividers (surveying device). However, I can find no record of any professional engagement or family (formal or informal) during his time in Jamaica. I have tried! And paid money for research on Jamaican records. But, thus far no luck. It may or may not be significant that both his father and his eldest ( Scottish born) son were named William. Surgeon Major William Cunningham Neilson (Indian Medical Service) (1813-1862) is my great grandfather. Regards, Fergus Neilson, Sydney, Australia.
