I'm trying to find out more about a Masselon/Massilon Nelms born 1840 in Isle of Wight, VA. He first appears on the 1850 census in IOW living alone with his mother Sally born abt 1815. I have seen notes online that suggest this Sally was a Sally Chapman, and that her husband was a William Nelms b. abt 1805; also that Massalon's middle name was Cleveland. However there were no sources listed for this additional information.
In 1860 Masselon appears to be living as a farm laborer in IOW with the family of Richard and Hannah Cary.He served in the confederate army, Battery A, 19th Battallion as a private. He may have been married briefly and had a child in 1880 (Cobham, Surry, VA)but was certainly married to Mary Sykes in 1887 and had three children with her:
Minnie Leigh Nelms 1888–1923 Sarah Martha Nelms 1890–1953 Harrison Shepherd Nelms 1892–1966
Masselon died between about 1892 and 1910, when his wife is found living as a widow.
Would love to know whether Massalon's father was indeed a William, and who his grandfather was, etc.
