My 3rd grt. grandfather was a Native American Indian who was an Indian doctor in Lowell, MA for many years. His name was (that he used) was Joseph D. MOODY.He and Dr. Joseph A. Masta were the only two "Indian" doctors listed in all of Lowell between the years 1856 and 1876. My Dr. Joe died after 1876 and before 1880. He claimed to have been born in Brunswick, Cumberland Co., Maine, but I doubt that.In the 1870 Lowell census he said his name was "John" D. Moody that he was a physician, race was listed as Indian, and born in Canada.Living with him was a 15 year old girl named Mary BARNEY who was also Indian born in Canada.Next door to him was the Barney family...Edward Barney or Leward Barney (hard to read his first name) who was born in NH, his wife Betsey M. Barney whose race was listed as Indian and born in Canada too. I feel my Dr. Joe must have known these folks.
Other surnames associtated with my Moody family in Brunswick are Dr. Joseph's father was also Joseph Moody born c1782 in Maine, but he also went by the title of "Captain" but from what I have researched served no time in the Military, so I'm wondering if his title of "Captain" wasn't given to him by his Indian family at some point which was a common title among them. His wife's name or the lady living with him whom my Dr. Joe claims was his mother, was named Susanna/ Hannah / Susan THOMAS (Tomah?) age 56 born in Maine. Living with them in the 1850 Brunswick census was a man named Abner DELAWARE age 23 born in Canada.I found out recently that he changed his name from Benjamin DROUIN and was born in 1827 St. Francis, Beauce Co., Quebec, Canada and his parents were Joseph DROUIN and Catherine BOLDUC, daughter of Ignace Bolduc. Benjamin / Abner and his brother George Drouin came to Maine supposedly at the same time.I believe George was in the Penobscot Co. area of Maine but Benjamin went to Brunswick and got a job in the mill there with my 4th grt. grandfather (Capt. Joseph) and his sons.Abner had an unfortunate accident and lost his arm at the mill and afterwards became the gas lamp street lighter for the city of Brunswick. He married Catherine STANWOOD in Brunswick and they had a couple of children.
My Dr. Joseph D. Moody married in 1841 Ipswich, MA to Sarah A. BREWER who was born c1817 daughter of John Brewer and Hannah DODGE.Joseph and Sarah had children Susan D. Moody born 1841 in Ipswich, William b.c1842 in MA (place in MA unknown), James C. Moody born 1845 in Maine, Daniel S. Moody born 1849 in Maine, Joseph W. Moody born 1852 in Maine and Edward Joseph Moody born 1853/54 in Maine. After that they must have divorced because later in Lowell, MA Dr. Joe remarried to Henrietta BOYCE who was born in Calais, WAshington Co., Maine and was only 26 years old to his 57 years old.
I am posting this info to Known Indian surname cites that have Maine links in hopes that someone will recognize this info and know something about my Dr. Joseph D. Moody who was an Indian doctor in Lowell, MA in the mid 1800's. Thank you for any help.
