Patrick born April 1818 (per 1900 US Census) comes over from Roscommon to the US about 1851. He's in the 1855 NY State Census for North Greenbush, Rensselaer, NY. Wife is Margaret Gallagher ( from Deerenmore?, Catholic Church of Killukin, Ardcarne, Roscommon), and Elizabeth is 5/12 of a year old.
They move to Wisconsin about 1858. Patrick runs a successful tavern, stagecoach stop, hotel, restaurant in downtown Madison, Dane, Wisconsin (supposedly called the Shamrock Inn, where the Majestic Theatre is). The Gallagher's, Boyd's,Veasey's, Higgins, Harrington's, Sullivan's, et al lived in the 4th Ward.... West Main St, West Doty St, Gorham, Blair, et al. He's doing well in the 1860 US Census, and I'm sure a few Union soldiers from CampRandall quenched their thirst at his tavern.
A Bridget Nerney stands up for the baptism of my GGFather James Edward Sullivan 1859 St.Raphael's Church (Edward Samp Margaret Ellen Sullivan marry there in 1916). Ellen Nerney came over with her.....so we think they may be Patrick's sisters. First born son (infant death) is named JOHN, so we think this may be Patrick's Father's name ( Thomas Gallagher is Margaret's father). There's a middle name in the 1900 US Census....J (John?)
No offspring from the male Nerney's so the line dies out. Patrick dies 30 July 1901
Has been tough digging out the information with SO MANY different spellings of his name: McNierney, McNerheny, McNierheny, McNierherney, Nierney, Narney, Nerney, Nerny, Narny.....some 17 variations in printed documents. Narmey, Narmy are two error variations on the name.
Anyway...Patrick supposedly has some problems in Ireland....Republican Army courier....maybe debts/famine, etc. and leaves Ireland. Would love to know from whence Patritius came from.....
