Shannon,
As I have it,
John Nesmith, b. Scotland 1671, was son of James Naesmyth and Issobel Loch.He came to NJ about 1685-1690, and married there about 1690-1695, but I don't have wife's name.Among his children was John Nesmith, b. 1701.
John Nesmith, b. NJ 1701, moved with his family to SC and he married there (according to tradition, with no written proofs) Sarah Brockinton, a sister of William Brockinton. They had sons John (b. c 1724) and Samuel (b 1726)
John Nesmith, b. SC 1724 and d. 1748, married Sarah Barr, daughter of Gavin Barr and his wife Margaret??,and they had three children:Margaret, John (b. 1744) and Samuel (b 1746).After the death of John in 1748, Sarah married his brother Samuel (b. 1726)
Sarah and Samuel had children:Lemuel, Robert, and Nathaniel. We have no record of Sarah's death, but it would have been after about 1765, when she was last mentioned in the records. This is the Samuel who died about 1798.And these brothers:John, Samuel, Lemuel, and Robert, were the Rev. War soldiers said to be the body guards of Francis Marion.
Samuel Nesmith, b. 1746 (approximate) married first (no name for her) and had a daughter Martha. Then he married Elizabeth (no surname for her) and had three more children:Mary, Sarah (b. 15 Feb. 1792) and Samuel b. a year or so later.Samuel, b. 1746, deid about the 9th of Sept. 1816 and he did leave a will. And he did say that his son Samuel was to hold Sarah's part of the property until after the death of her husband, John Brockinton. He did NOT cut her off with a peppercorn, as Boddie claimed. In those days, any property that came to a wife was considered her husband's property from the day of marriage or date when she acquired the property. If you study the wills of the time and place, you'll find that it was not that uncommon for men to protect their daughters' inheritance by keeping it from their husbands as long as possible.
Do your records agree with this?
