Hi!As part of my own NEWBOLD researches [I also descend from Thomas NEWBOLD of Somerset County Maryland, who died in 1713], I have worked on the branch of NEWBOLDs who wound up in Johnson County Illinois. Below please find what I believe to be the ancestry of Ottoway T NEWBOLD:
Father:William NEWBOLD, born about 1828 in North Carolina [according to a Johnson County History]; died after 1860 according to the same History.Mother: William NEWBOLD had several wives. If Ottaway was born in 1856, then my info has William married to one Mary Phillips in Johnson County in 1853.
Grandfather: William NEWBOLD, born about 1787 [per his tombstone] in Onlsow County North Carolina.Died May 22 1856 in Johnson County Illinois.Grandmother: Alice Wise, born about 1788 in North Carolina [per 1850 Census]. Died Nov 29 1852 in Johnson County Illinois.
Great-grandfather:Levy NEWBOLD, born before 1755 [per 1800 Census in Onslow County showing "Levy NEWBOLD" heading a household with a male over age 45, which should be him, and meaning he was born prior to 1755] in Worcester County Maryland.Died circa March 1802 in Onslow County North Carolina.Great-grandmother: probably Sally Hearne, born circa 1755 [calculation based on 1810 Census listing for a Sally NEWBOLD in Onslow County] in Maryland.Died after 1820 in North Carolina.
Great-great-grandfather:Purnell NEWBOLD, born probably between 1719-1725 in Somerset County Maryland [Purnell appears first time listed with father on 1735 Tax List for Somerset County.Presuming this is because he has reached age 16, it would suggest he was born circa 1719.]Died circa 1789 in Onslow County North Carolina.Great-great-grandmother: both a "Betty" and a "Polly", no last name either case, can be associated with Purnell NEWBOLD.As Purnell is thought deceased before the 1790 Census, and because there is listed on the 1790 Census in Onslow County as a head of household one "Polly NEWBOWL", it is speculated that this refers to the widow of Purnell NEWBOLD.But it is unclear from this limited information whether this is one and the same person, or whether Purnell NEWBOLD had two wives.
Great-great-great-grandfather: Thomas NEWBOLD, "Jr.", born probably between 1678-1681 in Somerset County Maryland.Died circa March 1747 in Worcester County Maryland.Great-great-great-grandmother:Joyce Purnell, born circa 1685 in probably Somerset County Maryland.Died between 1753-1766 in Somerset County Maryland -- she appears on the Tax List as a Head of household in 1753...presume she does not accompany any of her children to North Carolina beginning 1767.
Great-great-great-great-grandfather: Thomas NEWBOLD "Sr", "Merchant of London", known to be in Accomack County Virginia as early as 1674; moved to Somerset County Maryland in 1678; died in Somerset County Maryland before June of 1713, when his Feb 1712/13 written Will was probated.Great-great-great-great-grandmother:Adrianna [last name unknown], Thomas' first wife.Born unknown; where unknown.Died probably between 1685 and 1688, based upon best estimates of birth date of first child by Thomas' second wife, Jane [Katherine, recorded born in 1689 in Somerset County].
Hope this helped.Of course, if anyone can reinforce or contradict my assumptions about the above relationships or dates based on good source information, I would be most happy to hear from you. Will of course expand on any of the above for anyone desiring more insight into my deductions and the source evidence I've based it on.
