Shirley -- your post of November 5 2008 regarding Thomas Newbold of Somerset County, and the several posts from 2000 -- including one of mine! -- provides me with the opportunity to clarify a couple of things:
#1: I've been researching Thomas Newbold for the past 13 years, and have yet to find a single original source that even hinted at the maiden name of Thomas' second wife Jane [or his first wife Adrianna, for that matter]. The secondary sources that suggest it was Syms are confusing Thomas Newbold with another Newbold lineage related to Michael Newbold from Derbyshire who settled in New Jersey in the late 17th Century. And in my opinion there is enough information regarding the Layfield family in Somerset County between 1675 and 1740 to allow me to state with confidence that Jane was most likely not a Layfield.
#2: I have yet to find any information that connects Thomas Newbold of Somerset County Maryland with any specific Newbold family in England. At this point in time, we do not know who his parents and other relations in England were.No American sources [that I've found] ever made any mention of his English roots other than he was called "Merchant of London" in two brief Accomack County VA records circa 1674 & 1675.Therefore, any alledged connection of this Newbold family with any royals of England is the purest of speculations and/or wishful thinking.Whether or not the Michael Newbold line from New Jersey is connected I don't know, but I would be very wary of any such claims at all times.
Since my last posting in March of 2000 I have gathered and documented a great deal about Thomas Newbold and many of his descendants.I would be happy to anser any questions I can from anyone else interested in this particular lineage, and of course, would always be interested in hearing from anyone who has information to share.
Finally -- Shirley, I do not credit Thomas Layfield, son of Samuel Layfield and wife Mary, and married to Katherine Newbold, with a daughter named Sarah.Thomas Layfield and Katherine Newbold's children were:Samuel, George, Thomas, Mary, and Lavina.Thomas Layfield Jr married Naomi Hinman Rhoades Fassit [her 3rd husband] circa 1745, and they only had 2 children, Thomas 3rd and Naomi. The Thomas Layfield who married Sarah Smullen, whose daughter Sarah married Only Owens, was the son of Robert Layfield and Ann Carney. As I am not a Layfield researcher per se, I do not know what, if any, was the relationship between Robert Layfield in Somerset County and brothers George and Samuel Layfield, with Thomas son of Samuel being the husband of Katherine Newbold. But I'm pretty sure that you descend from Robert Layfield and not Thomas Layfield and Katherine Newbold.See this web site:
