Newcombs of Halifax & Charlotte Counties, VA
I am a direct descendant of James Henry Newcomb (b. 1832), son of Tom and Martha. My James H Newcomb served in Co.G., 56 VA Inf., CSA. He is buried in Oak Level Presbyterian Church cemetery in Halifax County, VA.The story goes, as told by a cousin who talked to Newcombs in Charlotte County, that James & his brother were captured during the Civil War & held in Kentucky. At end of war they headed toward home.James stopped and married (Mary Childress daughter of Rile and Polly) in Halifax County--marriage license issued 20 Feb 1854. His brother returned to Charlotte County. The only brother I have listed from a family bible source is a 1/2 brother named Grief.Another source names James's wife as Sara Childress daughter of Joe Childress (see post #1322 of 29 Mar 2005 whose author is deceased). James's children were Geo. Washington Newcomb (my gggrandfather),Henry, Jeff, Molly (Woodall) and 3 others that must have been by another wife:Jim, Charles, Willie are shown in Bible family tree record as 1/2 bros. of G.W. Newcomb. I have notes passed to me that Halifax County marriage license issued to Henry Newcomb, widowed,(may be son of James Henry Newcomb) and America Guill, single, both age 30, on 13 Jan 1874. Husband born in Franklin County, VA & wife born in Halifax County.Hope this will help clear up some of the mysteries I read on this forum from 2001 forward. I do have some info.-correct or not--that two ancestors arrived via ship in Jamestown from England in the mid-late 1600s and my direct ancestor was shot to death there.Would like to confirm this. Appreciate any help.
