Thanks for your reply. Here is the little info I have on the family.
Per the family story, both Maude and Pearl came from an orphanage in Union City, Kentucky. However, no records exist as the orphanage burnt down.
Per a family member, “Henry Maughs wanted to adopt Pearl but not Maude. The orphanage wanted both girls to stay together and wouldn't allow them to be separated. As a result Henry and Mary E. (Scholl)Maupin Maughs took both and Pearl was treated very well while Maude was not. I knew Maude as unhappy and difficult to deal with while Pearl was nice as could be.”
Currently one family source shows Maude being born in 1882 in Kentucky, along with a twin sister, Betty. A brother who died young as well as another sister Pearl is shown. Their last name is shown as Newcomb. However, it should be noted that later generations used Newcom.
Some undocumented sources show an Edward Heisson Newcom as the father of the Maude and Pearl. Edward was born September 1862 in Crittenden Co., Kentucky and died January 5, 1953 in Tarrant Co., Texas. One source shows an Edithe L. Asher married to Edward H. Newcom and is the mother of 2 children but not Betty, Pearl, and Maude. The same source shows Maude as a McCombs rather than a Newcomb. However there are enough documented discrepancies within these family trees that it is difficult to put much confidence in any of these names and dates.
