J.B. NEWLIN, son of HENRY and SARAH NEWLIN, was born February 28, l844 and died January 24, l922; aged 77 years, l0 months and 26 days.His parents were pioneer settlers in Woodland Township, Decatur County, Iowa, where he grew to manhood and was married to REBECCA HUTCHINSON, March 20, l872.To this union were born three children, LEOTA, LETHA and FLOYD.
Soon after his marriage, he moved to Leon and engaged in the mercantile business, first in the hardware and then in the grocery where he was one of the leading business men for many years.He was a member of the Advent Christian Church and during his long life he was an earnest active worker in church and Sunday School, honored and respected by all who knew him.
Besides his three children, he had five brothers and three sisters, MRS. A.P. COONTZ, of Woodland, being the only one living here at present.After the death of his wife eight years ago, he has made his home with his daughter, LEOTA HITCHCOCK at Omaha, Nebraska.He was buried in the beautiful cemetery at Leon.After a short service, conducted by Rev. Olmstead of the Christian Church, he was tenderly laid to rest until the sounding of the trumpet in the last great day.
