Trips out of country, state and city have slowed my response, but here it is.My knowledge of the Newnam family is through oral tradation from William Newnum( earlier aka Newnam)recorded by his grandson, E. P. Smith in 1936.This tradation records the change of name spelling. The copies of documents from his service in the U. S. Army in the War of 1812 records the spelling as Newnum with one exception, Newman is corrected to Newnum.
The oral tradation rcords that William was named Thomas (his grandfather's name) at his birth (Nov 1792)but that it was changed to William (Jr.)when his father, William Sr. died the following May with the prediction that the mother "will never raise that child from the fact that you changed his name."He lived past his 86th birthday.
This, with my origional post, takes care of my information about the Newnam (later aka Newnum)family.
William,Jr., in Indiana following his service in the War of 1812, married four times. His first three wives bore him children, a total of thriteen. His fourth wife, a widow, brought at least two daughters to the marriage. These two, in turn, married two of his sons.
I am descended from his third child, Peter, and the older of the two daughters his fourth wife brought to the marriage, Mary E. Stiner.
Enough for now.Let me know of your Newnam heritage.
