Phillip NICOLAI has an extensive biography which can be located by GOOGLE.DE searches. He was a Evangelische Pastor, born in Mengeringhausen, Waldeck, Hesse about 1556. His name occurs in Lutheran Hymnals even today. He wrote lyrics that were used with a variety of old chorale melodies. J.S. Bach adopted NICOLAI's songs which were published in 1599 in Frankfurt am Main into some chorale themes some 130 years later.
Phillip was the son of Theodor Dietrich RAFFENBOLE and the family name was changed to NICOLAI sometime in the mid 1500s.The youngest daughter, Margarethe NICOLAI wed my ancestor Arnoldt LANGEMANN whose own name was changed to Arnoldus MACRANDER in the same era. Arnoldus MACRANDER was a school rector for a time in Mengeringhausen, then the family relocated to Alte Wildungen to act as advisor to the widow of Count von Waldeck-Wildungen line. In 1594, Margarethe (NICOLAI) died of the plague, leaving a son, Josias MACRANDER. Arnoldus MACRANDER, married Regine (whose maiden name may have been SCHNEEKAMPF) who bore a son Johannes MACRANDER, who is my lineal ancestor, and a daughter, Elisabethe MACRANDER, (b. Sept. 1698) who married a son of Pastor Heinrich RUPPEL of Alte Wildungen.
