As far as I was told, as the Nieves' come from Northern Spain, [there is a tie with Galicia as well] the closeness to France has Celtic roots. In Northern Spain, where Basque is spoken, many areas have a strong Celtic (Irish) tie.In many provinces' a small bagpipe is played. Many postulate that there is a strong tie between Irish step dancing and Falmenco (imagine flamenco without the elaborate arm movements and what does it look like?).When the Spanish armada was destroyed off the coast of England in the 1500s, thousands of Spanish sailors found refuge in Catholic Ireland and intermarried the locals like rabbits. The "Black Irishman", as they are known, are darker Irish with black hair and (reputed) bad tempers. These were the decendents of those marriages. Many came back to Northern Spain.
So yes, there is a connection. Many Nieves' went to live in the Canary Isles (my great grand parents) and Gibraltar, which, as you know, is owned by the British.
An Irish or British connection? Many in my family are very fair: green/blue eyes, some women are blonde. My brother Edgard and I have hazel eyes.Who knows, but the Nieves' from Spain must have ties to Ireland. If you find out more, let me know.
