From :Short Life of Florence Nightingale by Rosalind Nash, sister of W.S, Shore Nightingale.
"Florence Nightingale's mother lived with her husband's nephew, W. Shore Smith in London, after her husband's death, W.S. Smith was a son of Mary Shore, only sister of William Edward Shore, who took the name of Nightingale in accordance with the will of his great-uncle, Peter Nightingale.(otherwise Florence would have been rightly Florence Shore!! - her father was a SHORE, who took the name Nightingale so the name wouldn't die out!)
Mary Shore, Mr. Nightingale's only sister was married to Mr.s Nightingale's second brother, Samuel Smith. The tie between Florence and this aunt and uncle was very close, and both were full of help and kindness to her.
In 1845 Florence passed some time at Tapton nursing her Grandmother Shore, a vigorous old lady whom no on else could manage.
