Hello to any 'Nigra' family members: 1. I am Jim Nigra, born 1943, San Franciso, California. 2. Father:Ferdinand Nigra, born 1892, San Antonio TX. 3. Grandfater:Pietro Nigra who immigrated from northern Italy between 1883 and 1886 at age 21 to Texas and developed a produce business in San Antonio. 4. He married Maria, who he may have met on the ship coming over. She was apparently from the Tyrol region of Austria. 5. Pietro's claim to his U.S. family was that he was the son of Constantino Nigra, the Italian diplomat. He claimed that he was running away from a pre-arranged marriage and was thus disenherited from his Italian family and lost right to the title of being a "count". 6. He also claimed he had a brother that immigrated to South America, perhaps, Brazil, perhaps under the same circumstances at the same time. 7. About 1962 when I was in Europe, I visited his purported birthplace of Castellamonte in northern Italy.Apparently there is some family relation to the nearby town of Castelnuovo Nigra. 8. My visit there led me to believe that my grandfather, Pietro, was basically a liar; in that he just claimed the heritage to possibly promote his own prominence. He and Maria had five children (Anita, Andelina, Ferdinand, Catherine and Jack). My family never doubted his family claims because of his demeanor and aptitude (he was a linguist, musician, and gentleman (always wore white gloves, etc.). 8. I have never had the time or means to follow up with adequate research.I'm hoping this 'Nigra Family Forum' might instill a renewed momentum into finding the reality of my ancestry.I have a lot more information that I would be more than willing to share with any interested parties.
