WARNING: Some Speculation Follows! I have been studying Nihisers in Greenbrier Co., WV and Shenandoah, VA abt 1780-1860 and am wondering if anyone has information that would support what I have pieced together:
Nehisor, Christian (bef 1765 - bef 1820) The oldest Nihiser I have found. Listed in 1790 and 1800 VA Tax Lists living in Shenandoah, also listed in 1810 Shenandoah census.
Nihizer, Catherine (~1792-?) m. bef 1823 George Ogilvie(1792-?) Shenandoah, VA and eventually moved to Iowa.
Nihiser, John (b.1785-94) m. 1817 Harriet Proctor, Shenandoah, VA John and Harriet's children seem to be: 1)John W Niheiser(1826-?)m. 1847 Mary M. Liggett 2)Maria E. Nihiser (1829?-)m. 1850 Samuel Liggett 3)James H. Nihiser (1833-?)m. bef. 1863 Susan R? 4)Martha E Nihiser(1838-1896)m. 1860 Silas B. Hoover 5)Mary Frances Nihiser (1843-?) m. 1864 Alex. Bauserman All marriages and other references found to these 5 Nihisers place them in Shanandoah, VA and of the same generation.
Nihiser, Jacob (1789-185x) m. Sarah [Unknown] 1828 Greenbrier, WV. Jacob appears in Greenbrier census of 1830, 1840, 1850. Jacob and Sarah's children appear to be: 1)Mary Catherine Nihiser (1821-1896)m. 1838 Alex McClung 2)Amanda Susan Nihiser (1823-bef 1878)m. 1847 Lewis Blake 3)William N.Nihiser(1828-?) 4)Sarah Frances Nihizer (~1829/31-?)m. 1854 William McCoy 5)James M. Nihiser (1834-?)m. 1860 Ellen T. Callison All marriages and other references found to these 5 Nihisers place them in Greenbrier, WV and of the same generation.
My theory/speculation is that John, Jacob, and Catherine Nihiser were siblings and children of Christian Nihiser. If this is so, Jacob left Shenandoah before 1820 (only John is in the 1820 Shenandoah census) eventually ending up in Greenbrier, while John stayed and raised his family in Shenandoah. Catherine married and moved away to Iowa with her husband.
Also, I have frequently seen the parents of Mary Catherine Nihiser McClung of Greenbrier given as Jacob Nihiser and Harriet Proctor. I propose that this is wrong, and Harriet was Mary Catherine's aunt, not her mother.
Anyone interested in kicking this theory around? Thus far, I have found no connection between these Nihisers and those of the Hocking, OH clan, unless of course there was a common ancestor, perhaps in Pennsylvania?
