Sergeant James Noakes (born Hastings, Sussex 1805) was married to Mary Ann Thornhill. They had five children.The girl, Mary Ann Noakes was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1841 during a short period when James's Regiment - the 58th was posted there.John Noakes was probably born in England in about 1843. In 1844 the small family set sail from Woolwich, London for Hobart, Australia on the Convict Ship 'Equestrian'. One son - James 'Equestrian' was born en route - the birth was registered in Windsor, NSW Australia. In 1845 Sergeant James became involved in the 1st Maori War in New Zealand. His family, who accompanied him, was housed in the Albert Barracks, Auckland New Zealand. In 1846 James left the army and the family set sail for Australia on the barque 'Slains Castle'.En route another son - Thomas 'Slains Castle' Noakes (my grandfather) was born.The family finally settled in West Maitland, NSW, Australia and in 1848 yet another son - George - was born. James died suddenly in 1852 and his wife died in 1860.They are buried in Campbells Hill Cemetery Maitland NSW Australia.
