Kathryn S. Foos, authored a book, "The Ellis Family", published in 1900.Her work includes a traditional story handed down through several generations concerning her German/Austrian ancestors. The story claims Maria Louisa was a princess of the House of Hapsburg who married a commoner, Georg Nogle. Nogle, a Lutheran, was her teacher or her parents gardnier. As a consequence of their decision to marry they were encouraged or forced to emigrate. The family arrived in Philadelphia (exact time unknown.) The author assumed that Hans Georg Nogelle who arrived in 1727 was her ancestor. Georg & Maria Louisa had at least two children, Margaret & Rosina.Margaret m. Henry Joel and Rosina m. Michael Burkett. The marriages may have been performed in Lancaster Co., PA. Henry and Margaret had two daughters, Katharine and Margaret who m., c1780, the Ellis brothers, Abraham and Jacob, sons of Johan Jacob Allis, immigrant on board the Dragon in 1749. The Ellis brothers were home havingcompleted current enlistments with the PA Militia. The Joel sisters had recently inherited land in the Back Creek valley of Berkeley Co., VA following Henry's death in 1779. The newlyweds moved to the land on Elk Lick Run where they reared their families. In 1806 Abraham & Katharine moved to Clinton Co.,OH Jacob remained in VA where he d. in 1809.Many descendants were named in honor of Maria Louisa. However, the legend of her royal birth is questionable. We believe the Nogle, Joel and Burkett families were living in Frederick Co., MD in 1765 as their names appear there in certaindocuments.Any descendant interested in pursuing the question please contact me.Thanks.
