The only thing I know, Bill, or at least, the only thing I've been told about the germanic origin of the name is that "NOLF" would be a corrupted form of "ARNOLPH" or "ARNULPH", coming itself from two old german words : "ARN" meaning "EAGLE" and "WULF" which became "WOLF" later on.
I don't know whether this explanation is true or not. Do you know anything about it?

By the way, in France we don't use first name and second name as you do in USA, "Jean-Michel" is a whole and only first name...
