Dear Jeffrey, Anthea and Ian,
I saw recently the Miller and Norie messages and was most interested.
My gt. grandfather was Henry Edward Campbell,("Harry"), Miller, twin brother of Sir Francis Norie Miller, Bart.
Yes, he married Ada Percival Nicholls at Peterborough Cathedral, but on the 11th Aug. 1879, (not 1880). They had three daughters, no sons, but the daughters were not all nuns !
They were, however, from the age of six or seven sent off to a convent, (Ursuline), in the south of the Netherlands, run by French nuns, hence no doubt the "nun" idea. Family ties were maintained -- they had a short Christmas break each year!
Charles Edward Denny, an international timber merchant, (Denny, Mott & Dickson), was husband to the eldest girl, Eva Percival Miller, (b.15/9/1880). Faith Denny, one of the first blue-stockings, had a degree in Agriculture, [apparently "all that was available" ??], from Reading University and died about 10 years ago, unmarried. She was their daughter and Felix Denny, as mentioned, their son. The latter was a barrister who had the option of `taking silk` but found "that he would be earning more as he was", so never did so. He married but had no issue.
The second daughter of Harry and Ada Miller was Gladys Ada G. Miller. Born 5/11/1882, Gladys married Richard, "Dick" Wright, a Produce Broker, of Mincing Lane in the City. They lived in Wimbledon and had a son and daughter, Chris and Heather. There are grandchildren, both having married.
The youngest daughter of Harry and Ada was my grandmother, Catherine May Miller, (b.1/5/1884; d.15/6/1972). She married Guy F.B. de Gruchy of Jersey, formerly a merchant for many years in Rio de Janeiro. They had a son and two daughters, the eldest girl being my late mother.
Harry, (H.E.C.), Miller was one of three sons and two daughters born of Henry Miller`s 1st marriage, to Annie Alexander Norie. His younger brother was Alfred Ernest Miller, an agent,(b.22/2/1861); the sisters were Jessie Ann, (1857-1874) and Lilian Helen, (b.13/6/1866, who married Chas. Walter Snell of General Accident).
The above Henry Miller, Chief of the Statistical Dept., H.M. Customs, my gt.gt. grandfather, married secondly in 1883, Elizabeth Ann, dau. of John Pike.
Issue of this marriage was Percy Miller,(in Insurance), Reginald Howard Miller, Bertram Miller and Cyril Stanley Miller, (also in Insurance).
I have no occupations for Reggie and Bertram but am delighted to hear the latter has descendants.
There would, of course, be no heir after Sir Stanley Norie-Miller, to the baronetcy, as the title passes only to the bodily male issue of the 1st baronet. Sadly, Claude, Stanley`s elder brother, was K.I.A. during WWI.
Anthea, your partner will, I think, be either descended from Dr. Reeks or from the Grixonis ?
I am being rather long-winded so that`s all for now,
with best wishes to you all,
