Helen Norrie was the sister of my great grandfather Thomas Norrie. Their parents were David Norrie b 12/6/1780, m Catherine Allan 16/12/1804 in Montrose. Their paternal grandparents were David Norrie m Catherine Drummond 31/3/1776 The children of David Norrie and Catherine Allan were Betty b 16/9/1805, John b 22/5/1807, Isobell b 27/3/1809, Helen b 22/11/1810 m William Carter 19/11/1837, Jean b 15/8/1812, David b 24/2/1814, William c (christened) 14/7/1816, Eliza Burn b 9/2/1818 m David Strachan 26/4/1840, Mary b 11/5/1820 m David Low 20 or 25/6/1852 m Walter Low 9/12/1853, James c 13/1/1822, Jesse Brown b 4/12/1823 m Charles Hunter 21/12/1844, Catherine Brown twin of Jesse, Thomas c 24/7/1825, Benjamin b 26/6or7/1830, & Joseph Patterson b 19/8/1828. Thomas Norrie m Eliza Angus Steven b 13/8/1833 Glasgow and emigrated to New Zealand 1855 where he was a pioneer Presbyterian minister for the whole of South Auckland. William Carter b 14/10/1838 (son of William Carter/Helen Norrie) married Isabella Runcimon in Drury NZ 26/6/1867. This is the church where my great grandfather (Thomas) was minister for 50 years. 11/3/1864 William Carter (Otahuhu), W.Young & Rev Thomas Norrie proposed David Carter aged 20 Bridge St Montrose for passage to NZ. David arrived (in steerage) 11/10/1864 on the 'Columbus'from London. At the funeral of Thomas Norrie 1905Geo. Carter, D. Carter, W. Carter & C. Carter are listed as other relatives present. I remember being told as a child that we were related to the big timber merchants and the firm Carters still exists.
