Wondering in anyone in this forum has information regarding Frederick (P?) Alford and Mary Erasmus Alford. After quite a bit of research, I have the following:
Frederick Norsworthy was the father of Julius and siblings, with Mary Erasmus Alford. They were married in Greene County, Georgia in 1821.The Greene Co Georgia Land Lottery of 1827 shows a Frederick P Norsworthy as participating, along with numerous Alfords. They apparently emigrated to Alabama.A reference on ferries in Alabama ("The Reason for the Tears") mentions Frederick Norsworthy as a passenger on the ferry across the Chattahoochee in 1831 (mistakenly transcribed as 1931), along with Lodowick, James A., Spire, and Erasmus C. Alford, who would have been his kinsmen.A message board post for the Alford family shows that there is a will of Frederick Norworthy in the "Montgomery Archives" - this message was critical to finding out about Frederick, and understanding that Mary Spencer, with whom Julius, Few, and Emma Norsworthy were living in 1850 (Newton Co., Georgia Census) was actually his mother, who had remarried. The Buckelews, who were also living with him, were his relations through the marriage of his older sister, Martha Angelina Norsworthy. The 1830 US Census shows a Fredric Norsworthy living in Monroe, Georgia, of about the right age (he and his wife) - along with children - but no evidence that this is them.
Further research in 2009 shows a Frederic P Norsworthy as a Methodist itinerant preacher in Georgia, moving to Alabama, and that he got into trouble in 1833 for inappropriate relations with females, causing him to be removed from his religious appointment.Another preacher named Ignatius A. Few spoke in his defense in 1833 at the Georgia Conference of the Methodist Church. He eventually regained his appointment in 1839, continuing to serve as a preacher, and moved to Tallapoosa Co., Alabama, where he died.Note that our Frederick's first male child, born in 1834, is named "Few" - an unusual name.Note also that the record of his estate, found by Ms. McGuire while researching the Alford family, is in the Tallapoosa county archives, from 1843-44.It seems to me that there is pretty strong evidence that our Frederick is this unfortunate Frederic P Norsworthy, with a dark past...
I'd love to hear from anyone that might have information on this family and relations!
