Iam trying to trace Walter Notman and his wife Margaret Rae who disappear from Kildonan, Sutherlandshire after the 1871 census. The had two children Mary Ann and James at that time. No trace in Scotland after that
He was born in Tongue in around 1846/47 - parents James Notman and Margaret Ormiston. He married Margaret Rae on 30 May 1867. She was born in Croick, Sutherlandshireand was two to three years older.
I have found a couple with the same name in the USA Federal census of 1880 and show a couple with the same name living in Bloomington, McLean, Illinois with 4 childre, Annie, Robert Walter and Thomas. The ages of the parents are more or less okay, so is their country of origin. The only problem I have where did Mary Ann and James go. Did they die in the States as there are no cildren who died with those names in Scotland in the period 1870 - 1880? I suspectthat all the children listed were born in the USA.
The other children all have family names apart from Annie but that may be a Notman name. Margaret Notman was the sister of my great grandmother Mary Sutherland (nee Rae) who came to New Zealand in 1875 as did three other members of the Rae family.
