Novak in New Jersey
My great-grandmother was named Ilona Novak.Novak is her maiden name and was from Czechoslovkia. She came to the U.S. around 1905, at which time she was married to a Paul Hornyak. Now the good stuff for all you Novaks out there... As part of my research, I recently went out to Rockaway/Hibernia, NJ, in search of the old abandoned St. Patrick's cemetery. This cemetery was associated with St. Patrick's church, which burned down in 1910 and was never rebuilt. The cemetery was supposedly closed in 1928, when the parish was subsumed by St. Cecilia's of Rockaway. Now, St. Patrick's was a miner's church and located near the Hibernia mine in Rockaway. On my trip out there, I spent nearly 3 hours walking through the woods on dirt paths trying to find the cemetery. The entire area is overgrown.Well, I finally went down one path and about 100 feet in front of me was the cemetery!
In the cemetery were 3 grave stones marked NOVAK.All of the inscriptions are in Polish/Slovak (as were many of the other stones). Here are the inscriptions. Please let me know if the information helps anyone. The inscription are line by line just as on the headstone.
