I am quite sure that the Pauline Schnell in this message is the daughter of Joseph Novak and Anna Kafka. One of Pauline sisters was Eleanor (Elinor in the original spelling) - she was my grandmother. Other's in the family were sisters Antoinette and Amelia, and brothers Joseph and Stephen. There may have been 4 other children.
I've been researching this side of my family for about 3 or 4 years now. Pauline (my grandmother's sister) married Max Schnell - this I'm sure of so I'm pretty certain it's a match. From what I have found, J. Novak came to the US in 1874 - whether he came with Anna or met and married her in NY is unknown. In 1880 the census has them living at east 54th Street in Manhattan - occupation "sigar maker".
Happy to exchange and share information - I haven't been able to go back any earlier than the point of arrival in NY. Biggest problem is lack of any information that pre-dates NYC. All I "know" is that Anna Kafka prior to marriage was a singer - or at least this is what was handed down.
