My name is Kathy Abeling.James and Emilie are my great grandparents.James and Emilie settled down in Gilman, Iowa and had 10 children; 4 boys, 6 girls. Frank, Joseph, James, Henry, Enid, Emma, Lily, Rose, Tess, and Elsie.Emilie died on Christmas Eve 1918 from the influenza a epidemic that was brought back by soldiers from WWI.Elsie was the youngest and just a baby when this happened.James was left with 10 children to raise by himself. My grandmother was Lily, and she was 9 when her mother died.Lily married Ray Richardson and had 2 girls Shirley and Helen.Shirley is my mother.James and Emilie are buried side by side in Gilman cemetary.I know James died sometime in the 1950s.Elsie is the only one of the 10 children living today. She is quite curious about her mother. In fact, I have a head and shoulders picture of Emilie and am going to get it copied so I can send it to her.
The picture of Emilie is all we have of her.My mother looks quite a bit like Emilie. She was told by James years ago that she reminded him of a special friend he had.We figure this must have been Emilie as the resemblence is so strong.
Emilie's background, origin, and family have been a mystery to us for some time. Most of the 10 kids were too young to really remember Emilie very well.James was quite bitter when she died.He would not talk much of her to the children, so they did not know their mother very well.
Do you know about Emilie's background?I hope this helps you.Would appreciate any info on Emilie you could give.
