I was born on the island of Pico in 1962. My full name is Maria da Conceicao Mendonca Nunes (cedilles under the "c's" at "cao" and "nca". Our family moved to Toronto in December 1969 (you can read a story I wrote about our move on my webpage at http://webhome.idirect.com/~mdcnuneshttp://webhome.idirect.com/~mdcnunes )
I don't know very much about the Nunes side of my family. My father is Jose Mendonca Nunes and his father was Jose Lourenco Nunes. My grandfather married Maria Amelia Mendonca.
Her oldest sister Maria and two of her brothers immigrated to California to the Turlock area. She was born after her sister had already left and only met her in the '80's sometime when her sister was already in her '90's! The two brothers were Francisco and Caetano. I mention them because oddly enough, Caetano had a dairy farm. The farm is no longer producing milk although it is still in the family.
Francisco's grand-daughter is a news anchor in Sacramento. She's altered the spelling of her name slightly since the "c's" with a cedille are soft and too many people mispronounce the name. So, she's Cristina Mendonsa. Her mother is very interested in geneology, but she's only got the Mendonca part of the family mapped, for obvious reasons.
Your request has made me wonder if your Nunes ancestors were known to the Mendonca's who lived in the valley or if they connected as a result of my grandmother (Mendonca) marrying my grandfather (Nunes).
If that is so, then Cristina's mother might know something. I'll try to contact her.
In any case, I'm sure that we share ancestors in the Nunes lineage. Pico is a small island. I will ask my father what he knows about his grandparents when he arrives here for a visit this Sunday. My parents moved back about nine years ago.
I hadn't realized until now that it is my (paternal) grandmother's side of the family that I am very familiar with. Thanks for reminding me to glean as much information about my ancestors from my grandfather's side before it's too late.
If you ever have the opportunity, I suggest you visit Pico. It is a beautiful place. I don't have any of my numerous photos on my webpage yet, but there are a few websites you can check out. One of them is linked from my webpage.
