Andrew "Andy" Oakland, the son of Albert J. and Rose Buffington Oakland, was born on April 25, 1923 in Canton, South Dakota. Andy grew up in Canton and graduated from the Canton High School in 1941. He entered the U.S. Navy in January of 1944 and served during WWII in the South Pacific until his Honorable Discharge in August of 1946. Andy was united in marriage to Iona Mitchell in Luverne, MN on May 1, 1948. After their marriage they farmed near Fulda, MN. In 1983 they retired from farming and moved into a home in Fulda. Andy passed away on Friday, February 15, 2008 at his home at the age of 84. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fulda. He was also a member of the Brewster American Legion Post 464 for 62 years. Andy and Iona delivered Meals on Wheels for several years. He also volunteered his time to help the Fulda Golf Course for a number of years. Andy enjoyed golfing, pool, gardening, baking, fishing, playing cards, woodworking and spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Iona Oakland of Fulda, MN; six children, Drew Oakland and Jeanne Koopman of Fulda, MN, Phyllis Johnson and her husband, John of Dale City, VA, Craig Oakland and his wife, Peggy of Hudson, WI, Janet Speckmier and Bruce Fuerstenberg of Fulda, MN, Steven Oakland and his wife Rose of Fulda, MN and Kari Kremer of
Fulda, MN; fifteen grandchildren, Robyn, Brent, Kimberly, Christopher, Nicole, Ryan, Adam, Andrea, Josh, Erin, Abby, Andrew, Michael, Justin and Jessica; seven great-grandchildren, Landon, Courtney, Rylan, Evany, Ryan, Sienna and Jaeger; two sisters, Myrtle Frame of Oelwein, IA and Alberta Wimsett of Tangier, IN; one sister- in-law, Dorothy Oakland of Canton, SD; many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Roger, Russell, Lowell and Arlo; sister, Sadie and daughter- in-law, Mary Oakland.
Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church Fulda, MN at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 with the Rev. Ken Honius officiating. Special music by Mary Jean Buschena and Sherri Isder. The soloists were Larry Dolan and Neil Dolan. The pallbearers were his children, Drew Oakland, Phyllis Johnson, Craig Oakland, Janet Speckmier, Steven Oakland and Kari Kremer. Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren. Interment at Slayton Memorial Gardens Cemetery Slayton, MN.
