Elizabeth and other interested persons,
I've purchased three of the anniversary decanters and a syrup jug produced by the Overmyer Mould Company.I believe they also made the moulds for Coca-Cola.
I thought you may be interested in the following is from ANTIQUE BOTTLE WORLD, December 1975, Vol. 2,
No. 8:
THE OVERMYER SYRUP JUG
Harold Bauer of Marienville, Pa., recently found this jug (shown in
the pictures) and wanted some in-formation on it.He wrote the
Overmyer Corporation in Winchester, Indiana, and the following is
the letter, in part, he received from them.
Dear Mr. Bauer
We are extremely pleased to have your recent letter concerning the
Overmyer syrup jug produced by our company in the year 1936, There
are not too many collectors who make a concerted effort to learn the
true historical background of a particular bottle and the designer
of the item.
On November 2, 1936, the Board of Directors voted to manufacture in
our own mould shop four special moulds to produce a pint syrup jug,
to be made of flint glass. The glass was produced from our moulds at
General Glass Corporation here in Winchester. This glass company is
now Anchor Hocking Corporation. When the jugs were completed, they
were delivered to Overmyer Mould Company, filled with maple syrup
and given to each employee as a Christmas gift.
At the time of this endeavor, the Board of Directors were Chester P.
Overmyer, President and founder of Overmyer Mould Company, C. P.
Overmyer, Jr., Donald S. Haines, Cedric O. Briner and Morton
Longnecker.
The person who designed this jug and produced the working mould-
manufacturing drawings was Mr. Darrell Eldred Briner, an employee of
Overmyer Mould Company. Mr. Briner's creative talents enabled him to
design a Christmas lug and to draw true likenesses of each of the
Board members. You may be sure that C.P.D., Mort, Don, Chet and Cod
appeared as portrayed in the year 1936. . . . .
Mr. Briner is a resident of Winchester and first came to work for
Overmyer in 1929. The first bottle which he designed for us was a
quart Vinegar, double-handled jug. This design sold mould equipment
for the manufacture of this glass Vinegar jug to Hazel-Atlas Glass
Company in BIackwell, Oklahoma. Following full-time employment with
Overmyer for many years, Mr. Briner now has his own design business
and has been most successful. Since 1929 we would estimate that he
has produced approximately 15,000 designs for various items. . . . .
Thank you for writing us.
Very truly yours
Mrs. Esther M. Brogg*
If anyone would like, I'd be happy to e-mail a copy of the article.
Regards,
Charlie
