The Clan Campbell site address which Andrew (Scotland) listed for us has a different opinion vs the American Clan Campbell.I have information from both of them and they do contradict on several name relationships.
In my opinion, just because someone in America had the surname OCHILTREE - OCHELTREE - OGLETREE - OUGHLTREE and etc does not prove that we ALL descend from the same ancestor.I believe that would apply to the Clan Campbell sept of (however many spellings they list).
I am in contact with someone who is connected to the McDowall Clan Chief. His work is highly regarded and he is a seasoned historian & researcher. He descends from the MCDOWALLS/MCDOWELLS - STEWARTS thru 5 different lines. This is what he had to say reference the possible name change (OCHILTREE and OGLETREE) -
"Yes, I believe it is entirely possible and probable. One example is the name LOGAN which some MACDOWALLS of LOGAN became known. That's not to say that there weren't already some other LOGANS out there, but some of the McDOWALL branch switched from MACDOWALL of LOGAN to just LOGAN.Also check out the orgins of the surname DUNBAR.DUNBAR is a place and some descendants of the preeminent family of that place took Dunbar (territorial name) vice the former patronimic surname (which I don't recall at the moment).STUARTS of METHVEN is another, some descendants go by territorial surname METHVEN and its derivations. STUARTS of LENNOX another ie. LENNOX/LENOX.How about the GRAHAMS and HAMILTONS.Use to be GRAHAM of HAMILTON, now you have both GRAHAM and HAMILTONS.To name just a few."
"Surnames in general are a relative recent invention to begin with.I'm sure there are other examples too.Anyone who says different hasn't done their surname research.Alot of times the families would alternate between both (territorial name and patronimic name).Same person, two different names. No doubt also during "the Killing Times" (1680's) in Scotland there were alot of surname changes going on."
"I think you can do some easy surname research and make a very good case of this." end -
If you have not been to www.ogletree.org - try the site.I am going to post some information there along with what I have on the Clan Campbell of America and UK.Also informtion on the OCHILTREE family of Cumberland Co, NC and their family connections which might be surprising to some people, they were to me.
Thanks for writing and hope to see you at the above site.
