In answer to your question of my line of descent, I am more than happy to oblige; my father being William G. O'Day (changed our surname) > Arthur V. > Thomas J. > Thomas R. > Joseph T. > John Oder.If my hypothesis is correct John Oder would be Louis' elder brother or first cousin, and Louis father would have been born in the early to mid-eighteenth century in Ireland shortly before their trip to America.Does Louis mention any part of Ireland in particular or what year his father was born in?Speaking of John's father, and possibly Louis' as well, I found a website that would indicate he had fought in the American Revolution.
The Daughters of the American Revolution, or DAR as they are often called, apparently have some material in their possession that would indicate John's father fought in the American Revolution.John having been born in the 1780s would not qualify as a participant in that war, but Delia Marie Oder Jackson, who applied for DAR membership was obviously able to do so using him to prove her eligibility. The link to the page I refer to is listed on John's wife page at http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jmljr&id=I113525http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jmljr&id=I113525
his actual page is at http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jmljr&id=I113526http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jmljr&id=I113526
The story my father related about how two twin brothers left Sweden and came to America via Ireland had always been something of a yarn, or tall tale I thought that someone had thought up to tell the kids one day.As my dad tells it two identical twin boys married two identical twin girls while stopping over in Ireland. These two were from a family that at one time was quite well-to-do (having a river named after them) and that held extensive land holdings in Europe, specifically in Sweden and in Saxony. As time has gone by and I have done more research on my own it appears that perhaps that this is more than just a tall tale.In my online research I came across a Professor Edney of the University of Southern Maine who wrote a extensive research paper on modern surveying methods in cartography that lends credence to my father's tale and their holdings.
As for why the family name would end up spread out all over Europe besides the obvious, "they like to move alot" answer, it appears that the family may be of Nordic stock that intially conquered northern Europe sometime about 60 BCE. This may also explain the earlier Oder river reference that my father spoke of.There is also material in written works and online that the "Oder/Odor/Odur" line is related to the Otar, Ottar, Otter, Ottor, Ottur, Other, Fitzother, Otherus, Otto and Odo surnames. If you would like a snippet of the surname origin material I have come up with please review, "Oder/Odor/Other surname origins" in this forum.
So that is what I am working on.My best bet right now (other than doing more hard intensive research) is getting the DAR to tell me more about John's father, or If someone out there knows a Delia Marie Oder Jackson or Marie Oder-Jackson to let her know we need her help. I will keep you posted on anything I turn up Bill, and while this may not have helped you I hope it made for a interesting read.: )
