Hi Jerry. I thought that you were talking of the same Doug as my kinfolk just wanted to make sure we were in the same Odom clan. I think I have finally worked out the John vs Benjamin "John" question with your help I might add.
When I began tracing the Odom line all the papers/bibles, etc I found when my aunt died that belonged to my grandmother gave her fathers name as just "John" no middle initial. Later I came across a handwritten tree that gave a middle initial as "L" so I took this info as "truth" and believed my great grandfather to be John L Odom. Later, a search on ancestry turned up a marriage record in Davidson Co TN for one Benjamin J Odom to one Elizabeth Hubbard! This record confounded me, as I knew that Elizabeth Hubbard was my great grandmother, it just did not dawn on me that the Benjamin she married was one and the same as my great grandfather John L. That is until you sent the message to me about Benjamin J!
Benjamin J and Eliz Hubbard had a total of 14 children [4 of whom died in childhood] one of those 14 children was named John Lee Odom 1864-1947 who was born in Nashville. The death certificate of this John Lee states that his father was born in "Mason" GA while the Odom bible gives his birth residence as Screven Co GA. Benjamin John's obit stated that he was a native of GA and came to TN as a "young man", exactly when I have yet to find out.
Family records give Benjamin John's father's name as Richard Odom of GA and his mother's name as Sarah Busby.
Given the documentation from the TN archives for marriages listing Benjamin John'smarriage to Eliz Hubbard coupled with your original message stating that Doug's "great grandfather was Benjamin John" I am now convinced that Benjamin John is also my great grandfather and not John L as I previously thought and that the "John L" listed in error on the ancestry chart I found was most likely the son of Benjamin J...John Lee.
I am now trying to follow Benjamin's parents Richard and Sarah through Georgia and back....I have found some suggestion that this line of Odoms may have come from NC, SC or perhaps VA but have no conclusive proof as of yet.
Have you had a chance to take a look at my tree on ancestry? I recently posted several new images of Benjamin John, Elizabeth Hubbard and their surviving children. I plan on passing the original photos of these images on to Doug.
I will keep you informed of any additional info that I can verify with regards to Richard and Sarah. And, I look forward to our continued messages.
