Jack, Thanks for the reply. I am descended from William (1874-1945) in the original posting, he was my g-grandfather. Sometime in the 1910-1920 range, the family name was changed to Kane. I always knew my mother Kathleen (1937-1991) and grandfather James (1907-1994) to be named Kane, but my grandfather appears in the 1910 Federal Census for Somerville as the 2+ yr old son of William and Margaret O'Kane. The death record for John O'Kane, father of the John E. Kane/O'Kane in my inquiry indicates that he was born in Londonderry about 1845. If any of this sounds like we may be related, feel free to email me outside of the forum, if not, thanks for taking the time to reply to my post. Part of my difficulty stems from the fact that there were so many Kanes and O'Kanes in the area at that time and John was a common given name. Even in my own line, my grandfather had: a grandfather, uncle, brother, nephew and grandson all named John O'Kane or Kane.
