Greetings to Jackie . . . Yes, Jackie, you did phone my mother over a year ago. Mom is now 90 years old and it did not occur to her to write your phone number and name down.I have been attempting to reconstruct a Goeken contact since she told me about your call.I was through Iowa two weeks ago to take my mother to my brother-in-law's funeral in Indiana. In route, I spent a night in an Atlantic motel and searched the phone book for Goeken's in the area. In Audubon, IA, Charles and Beverly Goeken live at 2110 Hwy 71, Zip 50025, Phone 712-563-2710.In Marne, IA there are 3 phones listed: R.L. Goeken & Co. 712-781-2230; R.L. Goeken & Co., Inc. 712-781-2280; and Robert Goeken 712-781-2314. Because of demanding work priorities since returning home, I have not had opportunity to contact any of these listings. In answer to your question, Jackie, regarding the Gerhardt Goeken name . . . Yes, I have become familiar with the name from two different contexts. During the 1970's, my sister lived in Atlantic, IA and procured a recent edition of History of Cass County, IA. Her husband, James Paul Theis, and their family are recorded on page 566 of that publication. On page 276, both Gerhardt E. Goeken (b. Friesland,Germany, 1838) and a Gerhardt III (Gary) Goekenwho married Wanda Robinson in 1942. Gary's parents were Gerhardt II and Zetta Murphy Stewart Goeken.Gerhardt III (Gary) and Wanda Goeken had 4 children: Karen (b. 1945), Mary (1949), Gerhardt Jr. (1961), and Karl (1962). Are any of these Goeken's relatives of your husband??? Here is how my family relates to the Goeken name. My father, Walter H. Onken was born in Audubon County IA near Brayton in 1909. Walter's father was William Reinhardt Onken born 1883 in Oakfield Township, Audubon County, IA. William's father was Wilhelm George Christian Onken born in Germany 13 April, 1838. Wilhelm's parents were Hayo Harms Onken and Freiderica Margaretha Goeken Onken who lived and died in Germany. In Germany, Wilhelm Onken's Godparents were Hohan Christian Goeken, Gerard Anton Onken, and Freiderica Catherine Pueniets. He came to America by boat with uncles and aunts Mr & Mrs Herman Goeken and John Goeken & Family. He resided 2 yrs with his Uncle Gerhardt Goeken on a farm near Marne, IA in Cass Co. The Goeken men listed here were brothers of Wilhelm Onken's mother. Jackie, can your records provide me with Wilhelm Onken's birthplace and information about his parents, Hayo Harms Onken and Freiderica Margaretha Goeken? Except for their names, I have no information about Hayo Harms Onken and Freiderica Margareta Goeken Onken, where they lived and died in Germany, or who their ancestors were. The ties between the early Goeken and Onken families in Germany and colonial America were apparently very strong ones. By pooling our sketchy information, perhaps we can help one another fill in the missing information gaps.Thank you for your reply. I will look forward to your future correspondence. A distant cousin of you and your husband, Yours Sincerely, Gene Onken, Santa Fe, NM.
