My Great Grandfather was Simon Opp from New Kossaka, a tiny village 130 miles NW of Odessa. His wifes first name was Katrina. They settled in S Russia in 1812.He had a brother named George, who left S Russia and settled in Eureka S. Dakota around 1881.My Great Grandfather and his family, which included Katrina (his wife) my grandfather, Fred and his older brother Simon Jr. left Odessa on Sept 14 or 15, 1903 for the United States. They travelled on a ship named 'Gruenenthal' and after arriving in the US, went directly to Eureka S Dakota where Simon's brother George lived. They left S. Dakota in 1905 to homestead near Linton, N Dakota. and eventually ended up in Bismark.I am wondering if your Georg could be the brother of Simon, my Great Grandfather. Fred (my Grandfather) married Lydia Geier in 1917 and they had 14 children, one of them being my mother, Frances. At an Opp reunion in 1977 it was estimated that there were about 2000 Opp relatives that could have shown up! By the way, my info also says that at the time Simon Opp left Odessa there were 3 other Opp families and 2 Knipfel families (related to the Opps) that came over on the same ship.
