Elijah is reputed to be the first to experiment with the propulsion of a boat by steam power. In announcing his death, Jan. 23, 1820, "The Prov. Patriot" of that date says, "He was an inventor, having developed many things, among which was the first known steamboat."
"The Scientific American" Supplement of May 14, 1887 carried a story about him. This may have been taken from a paper read before the R.I. Hist. Society Apr. 5, 1887 entitled, "Elijah Ormsbee's First Steamboat" Ref: N.E.H.& G.R. Vol. 41-321
A story in the "Providence Journal" of July 25, 1959 about the launching of the nuclear ship "Savannah" a comparison is made with the launching of Elijah Ormsbee's steamboat on the Seekonk river in 1792.
